Let’s talk about how to make happiness a habit. One does not have to go far to find people who are depressed, dejected, and lonely. Are you generally disappointed with your life? If you can recall a simpler time in your past when happiness came easily, when you lived in the present, and mindfulness was a way of life, stop and savor those memories for a moment. Happiness is not out of reach. It has always been right beside you, patiently waiting for you to notice.

If you have ever sought counseling for depression, you already know that you must find a way to say goodbye to old habits and thought patterns while creating new ones. The prescription for happiness is not a drug, rather, it is in cultivating a new way of thinking. Happiness is a skill that is learned. Happiness may only be a symptom of a life lived purposefully, on point. Whatever occurred to tip you off balance is not important. If it has been a struggle to lift yourself out from a period of depression, you may be trying too hard. There is absolutely nothing another person can do to make you happy. Practice achieving a state of mindfulness, a relaxed awareness of only the present moment. Deep breathing may facilitate a relaxed state, so be patient with yourself and just breathe.

Intentionally notice the good things present in your life, notice how this feels, and savor these feel-good thoughts for as long as possible. Next, practice being thankful for your life, for the lessons you have learned, and all the things that you have become. When you practice expressing gratitude, you will begin to notice your connection to other people, to nature, and to the blessings waiting for you. We don’t need a designated holiday to think about being grateful for our gifts.

Practice being generous. Start by giving yourself time to take stock of your blessings, then share them with another for no particular reason. The act of giving benefits the giver as well as the receiver. Notice someone near you that appears to need help, then freely offer it. When it is spontaneous, unexpected and random, giving of ones self may yield more endorphines than running a few miles.

The Key to Happiness is in the Choices You Make

 

The Hartford Happiness Club exists so that our members will be able to embody happiness. You already possess all the tools needed to let Happiness into your life, permanently. Think about how much of your day is spent reacting to negative thoughts, negative people, situations where we are clearly not in charge. When you look inside your own mind, is there any room for YOU in there?

Every human being on this planet gets through their lives one day at a time. Life on this planet is a linear experience for most of us. Every day that we are in this material world, we wake up to a new day. If you wake up in a good mood and wonder why that feeling disappeared by noon, who is to blame?

The quality of each day is governed by the choices we make. Daily life as an adult in America allows for very little physical relaxation time, and thanks to the nuisance of our electronic toys, our minds get constant stimulation as well. News headlines bark horrific, intrusive and tragic scenarios 24/7. Today’s tragedy tops yesterday’s, more senseless violence, now two or three worst case scenarios every day on all channels and monitors. To get through your day, you may self-medicate to take the edge off the anxiety.  Do you feel helpless – or do you feel empowered?

Do you breathe deeply and slowly at regular intervals throughout the day? When you quietly reflect on your energy, your internal environment, what is awaiting you there? You can practice removing your attention from the outside world, unplug from the media, and breathe. Focus on filling yourself with Love and Gratitude. Expand your Love, be grateful for your existence, and acknowledge your love for your Self. Contemplate a Life filled with Love, and grow that.

What choices are you going to make today? Try choosing Love. Think less about what you do not want in your life, and Love what you do have in your life. Choose to react to life from a Loving way, and you will no longer feel like a victim. Be patient with yourself, and choose to have kind and loving thoughts when you engage in self-talk. Engage in patience and loving thoughts to nurture your own soul.

To quote our founder Lionel Ketchian: “If you’re going to let things control you that are out of your control, you’ll never be happy.”

 
Being happy is a state of mind and a choice one has to make from this moment to the next. Anything worth cultivating in your life is going to take practice and must be exercised daily. Choose to hold on to light and loving thoughts, and it will be easier to achieve internal equilibrium.

Please join us Thursday, July 6th, upstairs in the Gallery, to hear Jim Rinere’s powerful story about his journey to mindfulness. 7-8:30 PM

Jim Rinere, a 22 year Connecticut resident, entrepreneur, business executive, mindfulness practitioner, father, husband, and professional speaker, will deliver a program focused on how his 10+ year mindfulness journey and practice has empowered him to live an amazing and happy life. The program will intertwine his personal story and the gritty reality of breaking through a life riddled by depression. The valuable life lessons will be delivered with lots of humor and provide tangible life applications of mindfulness. Jim will be the group’s travel guide through a thought provoking guided meditation and introduction to mindfulness practice.
