Kindness as a path to genuine happiness.
http://www.envisionkindness.
David Fryburg, M.D. is the President and Co-Founder of the non-profit Envision Kindness. The mission of Envision Kindness is to promote kindness, empathy, and compassion, in the pursuit of a happier, healthier, and more connected world.
We do so by using the power of image-based stories of kindness to stir the innate predisposition of most people to be kind. Our images are crowd sourced from around the world, illustrating kindness, compassion, and love in a wide variety of forms and interpretations.
We then share these images with the broader public. This is a public health approach to promoting kindness in an era in which most people are overwhelmed by a barrage of negative news and other disconnecting content.
One of the challenges of a novel approach like this is establishing its value. Envision’s research has demonstrated that images of kindness and compassion affect people deeply, inspiring happiness, joy, optimism, gratitude, awe, and compassion much more than pretty photos such as puppies in a basket, bunnies, or flowers.
As a result of this and what is available in the published literature, we are enhancing these crowd sourced images by presenting them in unique ways to tell their respective stories and allow for those viewing it to be maximally inspired. We are coupling the presentation of these images with other works of wisdom, the science of kindness (which is fascinating), concepts in kindness, mindfulness, and humor.
One of the major outcomes of being kind is happiness. Kindness results in a profound (eudaimonic) type of happiness that most likely results from the fulfillment of biological human need—to have meaning and purpose. Meaning, it is posited, derives from connection that is achieved between two people (or really two living beings). That is, through acts of kindness both the giver and receiver get to connect to one another. That positive interpersonal (social) connection reaffirms to both that they have purpose.
David is a published endocrinologist and scientist who has been faculty at the University of Virginia, studied the effects of potential new drugs at Pfizer, and now leads teams of scientists from around the world to solve common problems in diagnosis of disease or assessing the impact of therapy. David is also an avid, published photographer and student of Tai Chi Chuan and other Eastern arts.

1. Happiness brings respite to our heavy moments, which, despite all our best efforts, are part of the show.
2. Positivity elevates optimism, really useful if you are in the habit of reading the news these days.
3. Happiness draws other folk toward us…Yay!
4. It makes the day worth living – even when it’s a basic Monday or a regular Tuesday.
5. Happiness increases self-worth and confidence.
6. It changes the conversation away from pain points toward uplift and what is possible. Wouldn’t that be amazing around the water coolers of your day?!
7. It increases engagement at work…even when that work is repetitive and slightly boring.
8. Happiness is way more fun.
9. Positive emotions bring energy to our bodies.
10. Happiness opens the door for hope…not like hope that I’ll be invited to sing with Bon Jovi or hang with Denzel but grounded hope.
11. It broadens our ability to create a next better moment, upleveling creativity and innovation.
12. It is contagious, sometimes even with the irritable people breathing right next to us.
13. It undoes the effects of negative emotions, so that they stop owning so much of the real estate in our minds, and helps build inner resources like kindness, courage and tenacity.
Okay, so I can’t count – that’s 13 not 10 – but happiness also helps us move away from perfectionism where everything always has to be just so and into that territory where it’s okay to be human and kind of flawed and contributive to the world anyway.
So…that’s 14.
Here’s to happier moments = happier days = the life you have been looking to create!
With love, Maria

The Hartford Happiness Club is here for You! When you are looking for something more, find out how you can cultivate happiness.
Dr. Siegel prefers to be called Bernie, was born in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Colgate University and Cornell University Medical College. He holds membership in two scholastic honor societies, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha and graduated with honors. His surgical training took place at Yale New Haven Hospital, West Haven Veteran’s Hospital and the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He retired from practice as an assistant clinical professor of surgery at Yale of general and pediatric surgery in 1989 to speak to patients and their caregivers.
In 1978 he originated Exceptional Cancer Patients, a specific form of individual and group therapy utilizing patients’ drawings, dreams, images and feelings. ECaP is based on “carefrontation,” a safe, loving therapeutic confrontation, which facilitates personal lifestyle changes, personal empowerment and healing of the individual’s life. The physical, spiritual and psychological benefits which followed led to his desire to make everyone aware of his or her healing potential. He realized exceptional behavior is what we are all capable of. For more information on Bernie please visit his website at http://berniesiegelmd.com/

Every individual is charged with finding his own path to happiness. How often do you listen to that still, small voice inside you? When you are stressed, a little unhappy, and feeling as though you are running on a hamster wheel, just stop a moment. When you begin to realize that you may be suffering from information overload, stop for a moment and look inward. Meditation is a practice that allows one to quiet the mind, focus on rhythmic breathing, and being still. Sometimes all one needs to get a grip on reality is a little quiet. For a few minutes several times per day, relax and fully engage your mind/body/spirit with a period of silent reflection. Learn to sit still, breathe deeply, relax every muscle, and empty the mind. Fill your heart with love and gratitude. Immerse yourself in the process of living, and be thankful for that gift. With daily gratitude, self satisfaction and happiness are certain to follow.
The Hartford Happiness Club is looking for individuals who have decided to take control of their lives and CHOOSE Happiness. Our club is a positive, life-affirming and uplifting force in our members’ lives. In our club, our members strive to carry happiness into the world each day, changing the world for the better one individual at a time. The Happiness Club is a fun club to get involved with, on many levels.
Cultivate Happiness in your own life by making small choices every day. Finding Happiness is a process, a personal quest for some. Happiness is a skill that can be learned. Make Happiness a Habit, make it infectious, and spread it around. Implement practices in your life that will elevate your satisfaction and joy. Begin with mindfulness, a relaxed state of awareness of the present moment. Altruism, compassion, and gratitude are all part of the state of mindfulness.Today, millions of people are “looking” for happiness. Our fast-paced world serves up thousands of distractions, perceived threats, bombardment from ‘news’ and ‘social media’. This information age that has made us input junkies, and we feel more alone and unhappy with ourselves and wonder why. Happiness does not come from a pill bottle. There is nothing you can take to make yourself happy until you change your mind and BE Happy.
Happiness is a skill that can be learned. Happy people change the world around them in many ways. A positive, happy attitude is infectious, and it all begins with a CHOICE. Happiness makes your brain think differently. Once a person chooses happiness, he feels good. Happiness brings a lightness of being, a sense of subtle connectedness with the world and all that is in it. Happy people have better health, tend to live longer, and expect good outcomes, even in adversity. Happy people change the way they approach ‘challenges’ – problem solving tends to lead to more creative solutions, perhaps because we are creating more beneficial chemistry and hormones.
Happy people are not violent, are more likely to be of service to others, and share what they have with others. If you believe you can benefit from a positive group of people that promote happiness in their own lives and wish to share it with others, come meet us: We are The Hartford Happiness Club, and you are welcome.
